"Strange, how when I look over things, I still see so few I can trust. Even you, I doubt. Nevertheless, while I fear you would sell me out in an instant should you leave this place and find the Superior once more ... in place, if he is not, I hope that you will continue to support me in my endeavours. With such in mind, I leave you what notes I have managed to form on this place. They are paltry compared to your own, doubtless; your analysis and mine have ever differed. I have also taken the liberty of borrowing Lexaeus to carry what I can take with me, and to support me as I establish myself. It seems it is my time to leave. Marluxia has requested my assistance and while I can imagine better things, he is likely to veer far from our intended goals unless there is a hand to quietly guide him. And so I go. If you cannot follow -- as Marluxia claims you cannot, dubious as that claim is -- I trust you will continue to research the unique situation in this closed environment.

Beyond that, there is little to say that we have not already said before.

I took little with me. I left behind my new manga series, as they are likely to be heavy. Please divide them equally between Gokudera and Ikki. However, please understand my meaning for this: for one series, Gokudera is to receive all evenly numbered volumes while Ikki receives the odd numbers, while for another series, Gokudera is to receive all odd numbered volumes while Ikki receives the even. Also, if it is not too troublesome, it would be good if you could host a campfire for the cave and treehouse residents. I had promised to do so with the firewood I chopped.

I also took out the garbage. I believe that is the last of my unfinished business here.

- There totally is an envelope attached to a tree in both cases! They are different trees -- near each other, but separated enough by foliage and bushes that neither tree is visible to the other. BUT. IN FRONT OF BOTH TREES. CAREFULLY COVERED, IS A PITFALL. And believe you me, Marluxia can cover a pitfall more effectively than anyone else. (In the actual envelope is a pair of panties :()
- The pitfall leads to the same, well, pit.
- Marluxia's ULTIMATE HOPE is that Vexen and Axel get there at the same time and end up in the pitfall together. If not, I mean, you still probably will fall (even if you won't be there for long, lolol gravity, pfffft). But DO you? It's up to you. BUT A MAN CAN DREAM :(

So when Zexion came to visit, she brought things with her like her files! And I had myself lost all my files nearly a year ago in a hd crash.

And it turned out she had art I did that I never thought I'd see again! For a loose definition of art.

So I'm doing an image dump of ...marluxia's whiteboard. If anyone still remembers that thing. From its first use during a thread to... its ultimate fate. Which was mostly used to be inserted into horrible threads. Or AUs. In place of a comment.

Some notes on all the canons I've (successfully XD) apped from, and what made me want to app that canon/that character.

Slayers - Phibrezo

I was visiting vaultedthewall back in early May 2005 when camp first opened, and I was stealing computers wherever I went to follow it. We quickly decided we wanted to be in it, and spend the first few days of camp being open trying to figure out who we wanted to play who were young enough and might keep our interest. I went through a number of options -- Son Goku from Saiyuki no too dependant on Sanzo also hungry; Kurapika from HxH mostly to compare/contrast with Biz's Sasuke no too big a canon to review any time soon; Mayura from MaLoki because she'd be hilarious no I can't play that kind of character -- and ended up writing the Phibrezo app in a notebook while Kels slept, because I don't actually sleep very much. I typed it up, got her to look over it, and sent it in. It went up around the time I got back from the trip! (Kels, iirc, apped Doumeki which went up as part of a dup batch and didn't quite get in -- she'd later get in with Anthy and, briefly, Nell.)

I ended up picking Slayers because it was one of my first fandoms -- the first fandom I had lol five minuts of internet fame lol in, and one where I knew the canon backwards and forwards, inside out and backwards. (I'd also just rewatched Slayers a few months earlier with my roommate at the time, who is now our Zexion). It (along with a few other canons I ended up apping XD) was one of my first fandom loves and I felt confident I could maintain someone from Slayers. Phibrezo was by no means a favourite character of mine, but he'd been one I'd had fun running before. (I once ran a one-on-one slayers-based RPG with a high school friend of mine... because we were in the same computer tech class and both bored out of our wits and with access to a messaging programme. XD; Anyway, Phibrezo was a major thorn in his character's foot, or should I say balls, because -- it's a long story.) Mostly I was charmed with the idea of a TOTALLY OMNIPOTENT BEING RLY who is an egomaniac and Truly Ancient even if he looks like a Cute Little Kid... being trapped in summer camp.

I dropped him because he ended up being too godmode for me to have much fun with; either I wasn't handling him to the full extent of his abilities around other people, or he was constantly being frustrated or I ran the risk of him losing his temper and starting annihilating people. S-so he got dropped.

Still, even though I only had him for... what, a month and a half? I've got fond memories of it, and I think he was a good character choice for the earliest, manic-energy-filled days of camp.

Death Note - Mello

The story of how I came to app Mello is a little embarrassing, really! You see, I'd been totally in love with camp's Death Note cast (at the time Raito, L, and recently Near) for a while. Masako-chan, the fantastic attempts to murder each other, being handcuffed to a corpse carried around in a wheelbarrow. I wanted to be a part of that! (And trust me, Phibrezo really couldn't get all up in that. XD)

Meanwhile, Harle (who was playing Near then -- our current Namine, if you're not familiar with the 'Harle' nick) had been attempting to get me into Death Note. I'd been attempting to resist for a while because I have this thing where I tend to be really active with one fandom, with a second supplementary maybe, and then a few scattered ones I can never really give up (SaGa Frontier, Vagrant Story, Utena). The primaries, if I get really into it, often get dropped off my radar entirely or almost entirely once my attention switches to something new, and at the time I'd just shoved Tactics out of primary in exchange for Naruto, and I was really enjoying being dorkily into the retarded ninjas.

But when camp won me over I caved. I read the manga over the course of two or three days (at that point it was up to chapter 65, iirc) and spent the entire time desperately and secretly hoping I'd like Mello. Because if I liked Mello enough I could app him and then get in on the camp CFUD action! (Y-yeah it really had so little to do with me liking the character, THEN deciding to app, oops.)

Well, it turned out I DID like Mello, so I happily wrote up a rambly, rambly app and submitted it in mid-June and then got caught in the dup batch from hell (Mine went up in the first batch while the window was still open, got accepted, THEN got put up against the Mello app that got submitted while the batch was still open. XD; ). I got in, and there were many, many months of fun.

I finally dropped him in... January or February, I forget which, of 2006. Although most of my best camp memories are Mello (and oh god I still have the illustrations done of the Utena-style duel!), my interest gradually drifted away from him around November-December. It wasn't that I had any 'reason' to drop, unlike Phibrezo; I just got interested in newer and shinier things and lost my frantic need to play him all the time. So I hung on for a while but I was starting to feel like playing him was work/an obligation in order to keep him, which I realized was a bit silly, and finally bit the bullet and dropped. Sometimes I still miss him, but I also still think it was the right decision; sometimes, it's just time to let a character go.

Sailormoon - Haruka

When apps opened again in the middle of summer, after I'd been voted out on one character, I'd wanted to play from my first canon, with my favourite character ever and first fandom crush -- wanted to play her for a good long time. But I'd put it off because Haruka is a useless lump without a Michiru around, and so it seemed hopeless.

Finally I put up a post in my LJ behind a carefully labelled cut (DO NOT LOOK IF THERE WOULD BE VOTE ISSUES or something like that) asking for advice, and listing some characters with pros and cons. (IIRC they were Kantarou from tactics and Haruka, maybe another in there) This included Haruka, like the fact I adored her to bits, but I'd need a Michiru. And there Zinthos (our Roxas ♥ ) was, replying to say she'd been contemplating apping Michiru, but had been held back by the lack of a Haruka.

The way before us was prepared.

We made it through the always intimidating process of joint apping, and got up to vote together (I... think that may have been the same batch as Daisuke and Ken getting joint apped, come to think of it).

Getting in and getting to play Haruka was, I admit, a bit like a dream. Especially off such a goddamn brilliant Michiru -- and seriously, I'd been in the SM fandom for a long time and had never seen quite as much of an incredibly accurate Michiru. (It was kind of hot.)

Unfortunately, it didn't last that long because we hadn't anticipated the problem that Haruka and Michiru are, well, loners. Especially at the point we apped them from. They flat out refuse to work with other people, and try to maintain that except when pushed to the edge. And camp didn't have anything to push them to the edge; there was almost no combat back then (though lots of death and murder lol) because we didn't have things like the monster journal or event weekends (this ALSO meant we didn't get to play much with their secret identities; I felt I had to make up excuses to bring Uranus out). They ALSO try to hide their secret identities, and do so way more effectively than the inners, so without any event to make them transform where others might oversee, they actually remained secret in camp.

So although playing them was fun, the amount of things we could do waned, and eventually I nervously went to Zinthos and was like 'Uh don't freak out but I was thinking of dropping Haruka' and she was like 'o good I was thinking of dropping Michiru and didn't know how to say it' and that, as they say, was that.

Matantei Loki RAGNAROK - Mayura

...You'll see Mayura in the list of characters I was thinking about since camp opened but had discarded because I couldn't maintain that kind of character and knew it. XD

Well, eventually I decided I would app her. For the same reasons I'd thought of it, actually -- Mayura is hilarious, and a fangirl of the supernatural and mysteries was, imho, a fantastic idea. (PS: Someone app her). I'd waited months in the hopes someone else might, and then I finally decided to give her a shot. (A friend at the time was also thinkin' of apping Narugami. Didn't happen.)

My APP went very well -- in a stunning turnabout from the norm o lol -- but, also in a turnabout, I couldn't really integrate her into camp. Seems the sort of character I play easiest are are the kind who seem pretty serious, have a layer of CRACK right under that attitude they put up, and behind all that crack have some kind of serious trauma or angst. Mayura lacks the outward shield -- she's PURE CRACK and behind all that, serious trauma and angst. (...She believes in everything except gods. Because when she was four she prayed and prayed but nobody ever saved her mom from dying.) Annnd I've not got the energy level to maintain the constant crack (I dunno how Ash and Excel DO it XD) and, without the crack as a way to meet people regularly, no reason to express the angst.

Add to the fact that I was having a little trouble handling the "omg lol you stupid girl" that the crack I handled was generating (mostly because in Maloki canon people are more likely to laugh and roll with Mayura, or try to outmaneuver her so I didn't know how to have her play with characters who clearly thought she was retarded -- since I figured she's not too dumb to not notice!) -- well, that's when things got just difficult. She knew maybe two people at all well really, and in early November I decided it was time to let her go and hope someone more capable of expressing her sheer awesome hilarious wtfery could play her.

PS: Someone more capable please app her. FUSHIGI MYSTERY~~.

Hanazakari no Kimi-tachi E - Umeda

Oh man. Umeda, Umeda, Umeda.

...I'd actually wanted to app him in the first counsellor batch, but I couldn't get the app done in time. I'm pretty sure the first counsellor batch opened in the middle of a huge spate of horrible, horrible essays for me, and yeah, the chance of sparing the mental energy to app then was impossible. I think I realized I'd missed it a few hours after apps closed.

So I determined to wait the four or five months until they opened again, then app Umeda. Annnd. App him I did.

Umeda's been one of my favourite characters from before I knew Hana-Kimi canon. To, um, explain -- about eight years ago, our Zexion went on exchange to Japan. When she finally came back, she had mailed to her a giant-ass box or two full of manga and artbooks and stuff. With her came the Hana-Kimi character guide -- Hana-Kimi being a series she got into while she was over there. While I was up at her place (I think it was the time we marathoned Kare-Kano at like 3 am) she showed me the character guide and explained the characters and some of the early storyline. (This was a popular pasttime, verbal pimping. XD She also got me interested in HunterxHunter by explaining the Hunter Exam while I was doing the dishes.) I fell in love with Umeda early on, partly due to her undying adoration for the entire Umeda clan. Grumpy gay doctor? I had to get me some o 'dat!

And then Hana-Kimi got scanlated, all 23 volumes of it, and when I found out I devoured it. And still loved Umeda. And THEN it got lisenced and. Yeah.

So I had been determined to snatch Umeda up the moment I had a chance because -- and I, I don't know if I do him any credit but read the manga you will see -- Umeda is awesome.

It was with that app batch that I really started, uh, doing the vote turnabout thing. (Juri has been making fun of me for that lately). Th-that's to say, writing sort of borderline/wibbly apps (either on content or on distinct voice) then replying IC in the comments and hoping people change their minds. I've... stopped doing it recently (well, since. Heat. XD) because I'm worried it's getting too distinctive and people might guess it's me. On the other hand, I LOVE reading it when people do that in the comments (I still remember Fraser's app's comments oh my god) because ... apps really don't give us a good idea of how people'll play. They're a different structure. They let us know some basic voice things, and if they have a grasp of the character, but it doesn't let us know how people play. Reading that in the comments is always a make or break deal for me. ...anyway I digress. XD

So I got Umeda! And while he tends to switch between my primary and my back-burner character, I've never grown tired of him. I think this is because Umeda is for me like those few canons I'll never actually get 'out' of -- I may not be doing much with them, but I've been in love so constantly and calmly and long that those feelings just can't or won't change. S-so hopefully you'll continue to see lots of Umeda in the future.

Saiyuki - Hakkai

...This was a little serendipidious, in a way. See, I was just getting back into Saiyuki for unrelated reasons (mostly picking up more of the anime, actually) around the same time Umeda treated Gojyo and they ended up flirting and becoming BFF. (Oh yeah Gojyo, you're 'single' again now, aren't you? >D) The combination of immersing in canon -- getting through the manga out to date AND the entire anime -- and playing Umeda off Gojyo really, really made me want to play. Well. Someone who could do the same.

And guess who wasn't there?

I shyly mentioned my idea to Ame, who I'd barely talked to at that point -- two or three conversations only! -- and it was received with warm welcome. GREATLY ENCOURAGED I ended up writing up two hand-written drafts of the app in Victorian Faith and Doubt class, and then expanded on the second one for my official app. With mod permission to get a 22-year-old in, I went for it!

More omgborderlinevotesway attempts and I had my Hakkai.

Hakkai was a lot of fun, with the issues and the incest and the smilesmilesmile HORRIBLE DARK PERSON smile smile bad pun smile thing. Again, some of my best camp memories are Hakkai, at this point.

Buuut like Mello, after a year or so I just found myself growing away from him. Like Mello, I hung on because I didn't really have a 'reason', and I liked playing him, and, I'll admit it, I was really proud of my Hakkai. But I wasn't playing him any more, and it felt like I had to force it to bring it out so.

That's how it goes, sometimes.

Wild Adapter - Kubota

Okay, here's a story for you.

Sometimes I forget Kubota exists. Like, right now, I went on to typing up Marluxia without remembering Kubota in between. I even commented that it was hilarious I hadn't apped anyone between November and June. I also sometimes forget in camp -- oh, not that I play him, I remember that. But like. I'll be like "Hmm, I should post with Kubota -- naw I did that a few days ago" and then I'll check and it was actually like. Three weeks or more. Sadly? THIS IS CANON. I'd feel more upset with it but, uh. At least I know I'm IC.

Anyway. So. One day in like February we were doing the Saiyuki thing and our Zexion was like "I'm going to go shower. You read Wild Adapter while I do that" and I was like I was GOING TO EVENTUALLY why now, and she sat me down and opened it up in front of me.

(note: You may notice this a lot. Of the canons I have listed here, we got into Slayers together, I met her through Sailormoon actually, I seem to recall I mentioned interest in MaLoki to her and she dled it, watched it, loved it and then burned it for a present for me and we watched it together again, she pimped Hana-Kimi to me, I pimped Saiyuki to her, I pimped KH to her, I pimped DDS to her. The only one I've played from that we haven't both been involved in is, like, Death Note. XD We are like siamese fandom twins.)

Anyway. So. I read it and immediately IMed Ame and was all OMG OMG READ WILD ADAPTER AME and she was all I WAS GOING TO EVENTUALLY and I was like DO IT NOW and Zexion laughed at me. Then some time later I -- well the entire saga is over on Tokitoh's journal -- but I mentioned that I 'shouldn't' app from WA and essentially she said she 'shouldn't' app either, and I asked which character she'd app if she apped which she obviously wouldn't, and she said Tokitoh and I said Kubota and we kind of dotted at each other for a while.

Well, we had to wait a few months ("Why are we talking ourselves into this?" "Were we?" "WEREN'T we?") due to exams and essays and RL stuff, but we eventually double-apped.

And then Kubota got in and Tokitoh didn't and Kubota had to angst for another month until his baby got back.

Er.

No, I'm leaving that as is.

Kubota's not... one I want to drop. He's just too constant for me. And forgetting he exists is IC really. He's one I probably would if I was pushed to drop one of mine for some reason, since he's the one I play the least, but I think -- at least as I am now -- I'd regret it. He doesn't come out often; he's my backburner character. But I have real fun with him, and I love, love, love playing his voice.

Kingdom Hearts - Marluxia

Marluxia's story is kind of a funny one. I'd watched all the cutscenes of the CoM game in order to play KH2 with full information, then played KH2 and fell totally back in love again with the game series. And then there was the manga, and Organization fandom, and I found Marluxia juuuust the kind of character I wanted to play. But I didn't figure I'd app him until Zexion was up one day and... showering again I think actually or maybe cooking, and I was browsing devart. And I stumbled across this comic of Marluxia in his battleship all "LOAD THE SAKURA TORPEDOES" and I died laughing and realized. DUDE. HE'd BE AWESOME IN CAMP.

So I figured I'd app him -- o wait though, there was one of my Old Fandom Loves I wanted to re-app for counsellor (he'd failed the previous batch). And the two of them were way,way too alike to want to app both.

So I angsted and moped and wrote up both apps and decided I'd send off my counsellor app and if he didn't get in (which I wasn't sure of, since I thought it was a BRILLIANT app) I'd send in Marluxia next.

...Well my counsellor got weeded! So Marluxia it was.

After some rather strenuous app batch/comments, I had him and he's crack and fun. Right now he's on the backburner a little, but not in the "I'm bored and going to drop" way, just in a "Other characters want their time in the spotlight right now!" way. I know the feeling, and I know he's going to cycle forward again soonish. >D

Kingdom Hearts - the Riku Replica

I'd been thinking of apping the Riku Replica for a long time and kept deciding not to, for various reasons. I'd even gone so far to mention to Aviy when she played Riku the first time that I was thinking of it, and she went "Buuu" and tried to encourage me to app someone else (this was before Marluxia) (Love you, dear, I do.). Then Aviy dropped Riku and was in the comments all "HAY MARLUXIA I KNOW YOU WANTED TO APP THE REPLICA NOW YOU CAN APP THE REAL THING" and I was like O SHIT SON NOW IF I APP THEY'LL KNOW IT'S ME >E, because I really had no interest in apping Riku himself. Just the replica. (They're pretty different, for people designed to be like the same.)

So I resolved to never do it.

THEN I finally managed to grab a copy of CoM of my own -- I'd had to borrow a school friend's the previous time I'd played -- and, of course, played it through. (It's a remarkably easy game to beat in two weeks when one plays it during 2 hours of commute each day and 1 hour of lunch.) And I fell in love with that poor tragic aggessive little toy again and decided, reasons to NOT app aside, I wanted to so I should.

And I did.

...He is so fun for me. I, I have almost never had a character this young/innocent and with all the aggressive/defensive tendencies of a teen that age and it's kind of awesome and fun. XD And then you add in the crack and the trauma and I, I love him.

Heat

...so I had been trying to find DDS for months and months. And then, while visiting Zazzle, I found both games for a reasonable price and I was like "o um should I get them" and she was like DU IT so I did.

But then I didn't want to play before Christmas, because I knew there was a narrow chance mom'd get the games for me, and if she did and I'd been blogging about playing it, that'd be awkward.

I never intended to app, before I played.

But then I got to playing and. The game was AWESOME and the characters were AWESOME and I was just kind of blown away. By around the third or fourth day of play I realized I wanted to app. I wasn't sure if I wanted to app Argilla or Heat, but I was leaning towards Heat. (Actually, by around the Coordinate 136 bit, I had a rough draft of my app drawn up, just so I wouldn't lose the ideas for when I wrote a proper app after beating the games. I KNOW, I KNOW.) ...and that's when I calculated the time and went 'o shit' because at the rate I was going I'd probably beat the game a few days AFTER apps opened again.

Annnd I didn't want that. For one thing, the wait can be agonizing. XD For another, there was always the risk Heat'd go. Although DDS doesn't have a huge fandom or anything, there was already one character in camp, and Heat, of all the cast, is pretty damn popular. When apping, I tend to try to measure if the character's likely to go and speed up my app time because of that. If it's a choice between a character less likely to go and one more likely to, I app the one more likely to first with the premise that even if I want the other one MORE, they're more likely to still not be apped by that next month. XD

So I, uh. I poured my energy into beating the games before the app period. I FOUGHT HARD. I wrote my app towards the end of game 2, since it didn't have much Heat action at that point, and since Heat was apped from the end of game 1 I figured it was safe.

Obviously, I think yes, and thankfully the mods seemed to agree! Which I'm glad for, I like playing him. XD But here is some of my logic for saying yes!

First I compared him to KH2 Riku (as he's not a tiny shrimp like Sora, who is dwarfed by EVERYONE around him). We know his age: 16. That's a pretty young teen. But he looks like, well, I wouldn't guess him for 16 if we didn't have the canon number. So, here's some comparisons:

(There's also the 'Nobody age' thing, which is, well. As himself, as his actual identity and not his 'other' or past life -- and we do differentiate the two at camp given that we have both Sora and Roxas as characters -- which is certainly less than nine years, since the oldest nobody was 'made' then. Given his number is so high, it's probably within the last two to five years at most. So as for his own ACTUAL age, it's a very few number of years -- but that's all tangled up in identity fragments and physical age appearance and recycled bodies and best, really, not to touch that one too much.)

What is a heart, truly? What are these feelings, memories, and what connections do they build?

We have been asking this for years. Before I myself was made, the earlier ones were investigating it, examining it. To this day, I do not know what impulse it was that made Xemnas make me the lord of Castle Oblivion. I have considered many options – if it was some way to keep me under control, if it was a unique form of exile or punishment, if it was free rein granted to see what I would do with it. Perhaps he understood too that an unscientific mind may be necessary to work in the same environment as those of the scientists, must do the same studies, and may turn out other results. I have enough knowledge to use the science of such things, but for me, it is about intuition.

Perhaps it is my youth – memories fade with time, that is common knowledge. Feelings have faded for the first six, and with it, intuition. Vexen could scramble and study and experiment madly, but what instincts did he have? He had handicaps to his own field. I too am in the process of fading, but I am newer, fresher. The concept of the connection between hearts is not simply an abstract to me. I have none of them; but I remember what it was like.

"I want you to hold me in your heart." I very nearly said this to Sora a few weeks ago. We were discussing various things, such as whether he’d come to like me. He has not, of course. He doesn’t hate me either. Perhaps that state is the one I fear the most; what impact do I have, if I cannot affect the strongest emotions? I have theorized already that if others form links in their hearts towards us, even though they must needs be disconnected at one end, we may become more human again. Axel. Demyx. Who else?

I want that. Axel spoke of fear, of reluctance to change – no. I am not here to be like this forever. I will change, and I will make it so that they will all follow me to their own change. Why wait? "I want you to hold me in your heart."

Zexion has arrived. I do not want him to know of my conclusions for fear he run away with them, but I suspect he will draw them himself before long. He is brilliant, of course; they all were, and the experiments he has done are clinical and precise. He, too, was studying the effect of the chains in the heart, and the connections between people. Even in this brief time, he must have concluded something. Once he has a chance to observe some of us – Axel, of course, in particular, since he knew Axel so well before – he will notice how much more Axel seems to feel, how much more than the rest of us Axel is groping in the dark towards something solid.

I am not sure how this will go. Zexion is status quo, of course, but he has been trying as much as any to regain humanity. Would he follow my lead in Xemnas’s stead? It is not impossible, but I doubt it. And if he does not, he is a risk.

Still, he is the one who offered the olive branch, by posting his laughable monthly goal. He must know what I will expect if I am to coexist peacefully with him. He must look up to me as if I were still in command over his Castle. Doubtless he will do his own thing, but he must know I will expect that and he offered it nevertheless. Very well; I shall take him up on it. So long as he behaves loyally to me, the risk is manageable as long as I am aware of it, and he would be terribly useful in studying this. I have my own biases, my own desperation in this matter, my own overwhelming goals. If Zexion does see, he may come to me to confirm; enmity or not, we have worked together before by necessity, and he knows what I will expect from him. Or he may keep his observations to himself. If he does the latter, I lose nothing and must simply be aware of the possibility he knows. If he tells me, I will have a second opinion from a clinical, objective source, that may support my hypothesis, which would be most useful.

I suppose we will see how the game gets played.

Suddenly it all seems very simple. If this is true -- if this is all true -- then, had we been allowed to live among humans, as if we were human... had we been allowed that, how close to human might we have become?

I will not get ahead of myself. I must not get ahead of myself.

The heart forms connections. That we know without a doubt; we have observed it, charted it, examined it at length. The experiments at Castle Oblivion were studies in the same. Memory was one of the connections that could be formed. Our test subject proved beyond question the chains that bind persons together in the heart.

We had originally so many hopes for this. Since memory was all we had, if we could use that...

But there may be other things yet unexamined. That friends hold each other in the heart is well-documented. But the question unasked ... What when one of the hearted holds a Nobody within the heart? When there is no second heart to connect to, what happens? It was originally put down as an impossibility, an improbability at best. After all, who would ever befriend a Nobody? Nobodies do not have a right to friendship.

Camp seems to defy these laws.

Axel is changing, I think. Not entirely. In bits and pieces, perhaps. The more whom he befriends, the more hearted who befriend him -- the more human he seems to act. The display I saw last night between him and that photographer is a mere example of it. That encounter. The campfire scene. All those who go out of their way to inteact with him.

His reactions last night were unnatural to the unnatural, but natural to the natural. Caring. Morals, even. I recall that he has come to confess his love aloud and openly since he has been exposed to life among the hearted. Should I write this off as mere coincidence?

He is still a non-existent one; he is still a shell. But how can one not wonder what is starting to fill that shell?

Xemnas was a fool. Of course it is not hate which can provide a heart! Hate has long been known as something that severs attachment even as it binds. Anger likewise. What of love? Axel has spoken of it, impossible as it seems.

These changes must be observed, in Axel -- in the others, if they are changing at all. I must find occasion to talk more often with Demyx. And what of Larxene? Even for her, there are hearted who share some bond with her. It may yet be nothing, but the possibilities...

Within this net of connections, what may we yet become?

Because! I haven't seen people talk much about this and hey, why not? I've just replayed and/or at least watched the plotscenes of all three games in a row with an eye for these things, and. Why not share 'em?

Popular Nobody-related fanon

The Organization destroys worlds

Nope.

Now, to some extent, they certainly benefitted from the destruction of worlds, but there's no real sign they did the destruction themselves. For one thing, they wouldn't need to. In KH1, a LOT of worlds were being destroyed -- but that fell under the heartless and the union of Disney villains from the first game. After that, the worlds stopped winking out. Sure, there were heartless everywhere, but the reasons for that were given as not even Nobody-related... just that a lot of people still had darkness in their heart.

Of two worlds we know were destroyed, one was done by the original Xehanort (by accident; he followed a heartless to a door, and when he found it, he opened it because it didn't look locked and he was curious) -- and that destruction wasn't complete. The world heart was never taken by the heartless; the world was overrun but never completely destroyed. As world destruction goes, that was a) pre-Organization, b) done by an Org member's Other (which is NOT the same as the Org member themselves), and c) not enough to make the world vanish.

The OTHER case where we KNOW what happened when a world was destroyed and its heart taken... was Riku, Destiny Islands. "Ansem", a Heartless, was around for it, but there's no sign he caused it -- Riku is the one who opened the door, can only think of taking Sora and going, and so on. And even if it were spurred on by "Ansem", we see no signs in game whatsoever that Xemnas was even interested in his other's Heartless.

Sure, there are some benefits to the Org. A crisis might make the Keyblade manifest, and with the keyblade they can gather hearts. Once the Keyblade has manifested, they DO. Certainly they take advantage of the other villains doing it. But at no point in any of the games is it implied they're destroying worlds themselves.

The only thing that MIGHT, in fact, is Riku accusing the Nobodies of being hated because they "mess up their worlds". If anyone would know what world destruction is, it's Riku; it's NOT 'messing up'. It seems to me like Riku's more concerned in something like the world order; the Organization are world hoppers, and may be 'meddling'.

Sure, it's fun to play with -- I've used it several times myself in my fics -- but it's not that present in the canon.

The Organization are running around turning people into Heartless to get control of their Heartless and their Nobody

Only partially!

We see attempts on it happen with a total of two people. Or rather, we SEE it with one, and hear about it from another. Xaldin attempts to turn the Beast to get control of his Heartless and his Nobody. Fact, end of story. We also hear the (lying, but there's no reason for him to ly here) Peddler tell Sora that a man in a black cloak wanted Jafar free so he could turn Jafar into a Heartless, and then promised to clean it up so nobody'd get hurt. Sora seems to believe the first part (that he'd turn Jafar into a heartless) but not the second part (that he'd handle things to prevent anyone from getting hurt). We also have no idea which black cloaked man this is. We can probably be PRETTY sure it's not Riku. Anyway.

The only other thing we see them do that even MIGHT be relevant is the dragon which turned into a Heartless -- It seems vaguely implied Xigbar might have done it, IF you assume the Organization were GENERALLY trying to turn things into Heartless -- but all we see of Xigbar is him sneaking around listening at the emperor's door (which might imply, more than anything, that he'd been following RIKU). It's also possible that the Heartless itself changed it. All we know is what the Emperor said RIKU said, which is that 'someone of evil intent disturbed the dragon and turned it into a heartless'. The Organization, or no? We don't know. It's implied, yeah, but is that what's going on there?

Even if it was, it implies something different from a mass "trying to execute people to get their heartless and nobody" -- instead, it's pinpoint. They go after Beast because KH1proves that Beast has the willpower to MAKE a Nobody. After Jafar, presumably, because they want another massive Heartless to throw at Sora, since the bigger hearts seem to make Kingdom Hearts faster. The dragon likewise.

But it's something useful to note that in Port Royal, it's SORA who jumps to the conclusion that Luxord'll go after the city where there'll be 'lots of hearts'. Sure, there's Heartless in the town, but there's Heartless in EVERY town, and even Yen Sid doesn't try to explain that one as the Nobodies' fault. There certainly aren't a LOT of them. (Heck, we KNOW Pete's been raising a Heartless army for at least a year for himself and Maleficient, and we see Nobodies FIGHTING these Heartless in Hollow Bastion at one point). There isn't any sign of Luxord in the town. It might be fair to say that Sora's drawn an erroneous conclusion.

Sure, they NEED hearts. But there are a lot of heartless around, and other than a few key individuals, it doesn't seem like they're attempting any mass turning-people-into-heartless maneuver.

...It's also worth noting that even these pinpoint maneuvers of targetting certain individuals... only happens after the Org has lost half its members. Castle Oblivion took out five, Roxas turned traitor and got absorbed, Axel turned traitor... even discounting Demyx's death, as Xaldin had started to work on Beast BEFORE that, that's seven out of thirteen. NOT a small hit on an Organization that's already pretty small. It's quite possible that they were attempting to... well, replenish their ranks, as best they could.

And heck. At least in the manga, they tried directly recruiting Riku (the game, he denied it right off and they gave up) and his response was basically "You stink of darkness." [killz0rs]

...So one can see why they might not try direct recruitment.

Nobodies are touch-sensitive

Yeah, this is fanon.

...It's fun and we love to play with it, and a lot of the players use it to some extent! And it seems fair to ASSUME that Nobodies probably have touch issues given how they dress. If even the most human ones wear gloves all the time, they're not wanting to have their skin casually touch things. (That or they really look malformed under there. Also possible! But seems not hugely implied, given Namine and Roxas. But then, Namine's special, and Roxas we really only see with bare skin when he's digital/ethereal)

Anyway, it's something in popular fanon but not canon, but not unimplied in canon, anyway.

'Lesser' Nobodies are unintelligent/controlled by higher ranking ones

First, 'lesser' Nobodies tends to be a misnomer. The actual guide describes almost all of those as "high-ranking", with exceptions for the Dusks and Creepers.

That aside, though, we know for a fact that one of the things that MAKES a Nobody is their ability to think and plan. That doesn't change just because they look less human.

Also, heh. The control/command thing is, interesting, one of those lovely little propaganda detail things. Pretty much every time the "command" thing is used -- ie, The nobodies are under the command of Org members -- it's in an official source. However, people against the Nobodies tend to call it control. The assumption, I guess, is that they think of them still as the Heartless -- not as sentient beings.

We do see some variants though. If Axel commands the Assassins, why would they stop after Axel's betrayed them -- and they do ("I think I liked it better when they were on MY side."). A commander not loyal to the cause isn't a commander. Or there's signs that some choose what side to be on. Ie, the Samurai fight Sora all the way through the World that Never Was, but we see two obey Roxas -- a traitor -- even though it's pretty much a suicide mission.

There ARE ways to read this all as control, but knowing that they all ARE thinking remnants of their former selves, and given the different plaecs we see the control vs command... I think it does mean something.

Nothing lives in the Dark City

Pretty sure the Nobodies do. Sure, the streets are swarming with Heartless, but the rooms they pass are lit. Heartless would hardly put on lights. They pass buildings that look like bars, buildings that look like restaurants. Club type buildings. Signs everywhere, in some foreign language, marking off what look like building signs.

Heck, Memory's Skyscraper's description is something like the building standing watch over the residents of the darkness. It too has lit rooms throughout it.

And even though we don't see them on the streets normally -- when the hearts start to fall, the Nobodies are out there dancing in the streets, trying to catch them.

Pretty sure that's their home. No solid proof, but all the indicators are there.

Castle Oblivion futzes with your memory

Nah. Everyone TELLS Sora it does, but they're lying. I covered this in another essay, but basically it doesn't, and Marluxia only set it up to tell Sora it did so that he wouldn't notice Namine fiddling with his memories.

Riku makes it through Castle Oblivion with his memories intact, so! Yeah.

Xemnas is Xehanort

Throughout the game Xemnas takes a pretty bad rap for what his Other did. Both in Final Mix when they call him Ansem, and in Kingdom Hearts 2 when they call him Xehanort, he responds that it's nostalgic to hear. These aren't names he's used to any more -- either of them.

I've a long essay ramble here but it'll stay for another day. Needless to say, though, although all the time in his Ansem Reports, DiZ calls Xemnas "Xehanort", and although Xemnas has Xehanort's memories, and although Xemnas answers to the name Xehanort when DiZ calls him it -- the guy's not him. ROXAS gets SORA'S memories throughout the beginning of KH2, but blaming Roxas for things Sora did years ago would be pretty unfair. Blaming Xemnas for Xehanort kicking DiZ into a dark world or opening a door is like blaming Roxas for a time in childhood when Sora made Selphie cry or something. There's a disconnect there that I don't see often enough in fandom! Especially given that what little we see of Xehanort's personality in the flashback, it's still different from Xemnas's.

Moreover, their goals are pretty different. Xehanort was very DARKNESS DARKNESS I WANT TO LEAVE THIS WORLD, Ansem was very DARKNESS YAY DARKNESS GIVE ME POWER .... Xemnas's stated goals are to get Kingdom Hearts to share its power with all Nobodies and bring them into existence, and to make a world for them. Kind of ironic but UH ANYWAY, different personality, different goals -- different people.

SO IN SHORT uh Xemnas =/= Xehanort, even if a lot of people want him to be.
